Tips for decorating your bathroom Cape Cod-style

Before you begin the project of redecorating your bathroom, you'll need to decide what design theme you plan to use. Do you prefer a modern look or vintage aesthetic? Or perhaps you've always been drawn to the decor found in traditional New England homes? If that's the case, then a Cape Cod-style bathroom design is the perfect choice for your remodel. Here are a few tips for achieving the ideal seaside look:

Install a contemporary clawfoot tub
Your standard bathtub simply won't do if you want your bathroom to look like it belongs in Cape Cod! Instead, you'll need a contemporary clawfoot tub. A pedestal double-ended clawfoot bathtub is the perfect choice because it doesn't have the claw feet that contribute to a more vintage aesthetic. The sleek white finish will match perfectly with the clean-cut look you're trying to achieve.

Stick with shades of white, blue and beige
Traditionally, blue, beige and white are the colors you'll find in Cape Cod-style rooms. Why, you ask? To evoke the feeling of a beach, of course! There are many different ways you can incorporate these colors into your bathroom decor, from towels and linens to the paint on the walls. Consider choosing a light blue paint with white trim and beige accents.

Add a slightly nautical feel
In concert with the beach theme, most Cape Cod-style bathrooms attempt to achieve a nautical feel without going overboard. You don't want to go so far as to hang anchors on the walls, but you can strategically place a few shells on the counter or transform a porthole window into a mirror. Make sure any nautical-themed items you add to your bathroom are understated and classic.

Choose the proper flooring
Traditionally, Cape Cod-style rooms have wood floors that are made of either pine or oak. However, many modern homeowners prefer to use tile in their bathrooms due to the excessive amount of moisture that is present at any given time. If you plan to use tile, be sure it's in a light beige or white hue. You could also choose to use a faux wood material on your floors if you still want that classic look.

Allow in plenty of light
Bright and natural light is a key component of any Cape Cod-style room. If your bathroom doesn't already have a window, consider adding a skylight. For a more immediate (and less drastic) fix, you can always include both overhead lights and sconces to ensure every corner of the room is bathed in a fresh glow.
